INTRODUCTION

A carrier in a field of pharmacovigilance can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of drug safety regulations for monitoring the drug safety in the market. It is a field of medicine that focuses on the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug related problems. They provide advice to healthcare professionals i.e, how to use the medicines safely and effectively. The career opportunities available in various pharma companies, regulatory and drug safety consultancies and health authorities are drug safety associates or officers; drug safety managers or directors; drug safety scientist or co-ordinator, pharmacovigilance consultants, pharmacovigilance physicians, etc.

Drug Safety Associate:

This is the entry level job in Pharmacovigilance. Drug safety associate mainly involved in case creation data entry of all the information available in the document, reconciliation, checking for minimum safety information and follow up process. They need to submit the reports to the regulatory authorities.  

Drug Safety Scientist

Drug safety scientist is yet another major career opportunity in Pharmacovigilance. A person can become DSS after gaining an experience of almost 2 to 3 years as DSA. One can become drug safety scientist only if he has complete knowledge about medical coding, good understanding medial terms and common understanding regulatory affairs. The job of DSS is to make sure that their pharmaceutical products are effective and safe. They are responsible for identifying and reporting on the adverse effects of drugs.

Aggregate Report Scientist

The next stop in the career path of Pharmacovigilance is the aggregate report scientist. This involves the compilation of the safety data for a drug over a prolonged period of time. One can attain this position after acquiring good narrative writing experience of individual cases like writing of PSUR and PADER. 

Clinical Research Associate

CRAs are responsible for collecting and analysing the data from patient records and medical histories, and monitoring the safety of drugs and treatments.

Medical Writer

The science of monitoring and evaluating the safety of medicines. They are responsible for creating and maintaining accurate and up to date documents that provide information on the safety of medicines.

Drug Safety Officer

Drug safety officer plays a vital role in the pharmacovigilance i.e., the primary responsibility is to ensure that clinical research organizations are compliant with the regulations and standards set by regulatory bodies when it comes to drug safety. They are also responsible for the monitoring the safety of drugs and medical devices.
