MEASURING OF BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS USING SMART CONTACT LENS

MEASURING OF BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS USING SMART CONTACT LENS:

Diabetes mellitus is the disease where there is improper production of insulin is seen and lead to abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates are absorbed and these increased glucose levels are seen in blood.

Types:

Insulin dependence

Insulin resistance

Gestational diabetes

Other diabetes

Contact lens: the substances that are placed on the eye for correction of eye problems

Smart contact lens: This involves a surgical Replacement of the existing lens or new lens with an electric device.

These smart contact lenses help to detect monitor the blood sugar levels with the blink of an eye in diabetes patients.

This detects the patient’s glucose levels in the tears using built in wireless sensors

These consist of a special sensor that uses electrodes made of highly stretchable and transparent materials that makes the lens easier to ware

Soft contact lens which encapsulates electronic lens sensor which detects glucose in tears chip and antenna which receives power and sends information

Requirements:

• This device should not interfere with the vision

• It should not cause any eye irritation

• It should be transparent

• It has to provide responses to glucose that are present in the tear

Outline:

It is a miniaturized electrochemical glucose sensor which is placed between two layers of hydrogel matric

Sensors are connected to a tiny battery and isa tiny wireless chip that are arranged onto an electronic ring that avoid this is pupil

There is a wireless antenna inside the lens used to communicate information to the wireless device this antenna will read and analyse the data and communicate the data via wireless technology and transmitted to a smartphone device

This protype measures glucose concentration in tears once per second

There is an addition of micro-LEDs lights that warns the patient whenever the blood glucose levels are high or low which tells the patient to manage the levels.

Advantages:

✓ Use of a smart contact lenses improves the speed and painless procedure

✓ It gives accurate readings ensures efficacy and safer user

Challenges:

✓ The smart contact lens should be small enough that should not interfere with sensor

✓ It does not cause the irritation, itching, infections to the eye which alters the concentration of metabolites and proteins within the tear fluid

✓ It has to respond only to the specific glucose and not any sense of other metabolites in tears

Conclusion:

Smart contact lens is a new technology which involves in the continues monitoring of the glucose levels

It is non invasive and mobility for patients.
