DIGITALIZATION
IN EDUCATION SYSTEM:
In the era of 21st-century
Smartphones and Computers are no longer unknown words. Every system in
modernization depends on technology like Health care, Security, Transportation
and so does the ‘EDUCATION SYSTEM’. In brief, it is educating students of all
ages through digital technology and gadgets. This may include Smartphones,
Laptops, Computers, Internet, Software applications, and other types of digital
technologies. This is a part of modernization.
The main medium of digitalization is the 'Internet'. The people who get access
to the internet are in that 59% of the world population and the rest 41% is
nowhere related to Digitization. As every coin has two sides, the
digitalization also has pros and cons.
PROS OF
DIGITALIZATION:
As a whole, digitalization comes
to the positive side of the topic. It has a vast number of advantages. One has
to be productive with the advantages and make the best out of it. Digital
education is generating new learning opportunities as students engage in the
online, digital environment, and personalized instructors.
1. TRANSPORTATION:
By the National Travel Survey
2014, in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, the students spend
almost 3 hours traveling, and by the time they reach home, they get so tired.
But utilizing digitalization students get to study, be more productive, and
extra activities after their study hours are a bonus. It saves time, money,
maintains good physical health, and gives a peaceful end to their day rather
than the horrible traffic scenes. Indirectly reduces traffic and emission of
CO2.
2. PERSONALIZED LEARNING:
No boundaries, no restrictions,
no timetable, and no pressure. Everything is on their fingertips. Answers to
their million questions in a fraction of seconds. There is no generalized
timetable; all that matters is the student's free time and their way of
learning things. To explain this with an example, a student might be interested
in studying in the night time and not in the morning hours so the generalized
timetable is pressure to them.
3. REPEAT MODE:
Unlike offline classes, online
classes have a feature of repeating it as many times as you want until you
understand. This helps all types of students from poor to above average. This
makes the digitalization a healthy mode of learning where no student's doubts
are left unclear and every student gets the best, they are capable of.
4. STAY COMPETITIVE:
You are no longer bound to the
class of 50 students. You can compete with the whole world. You get to write
exams, attend online debates, and get to gather knowledge from all over the
world. Students get self-motivated and more accountable.
5. EASY TO ACCESS AND ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE:
Every student who is familiar
with smartphones can get access to the internet and so does the classes. Even
if some technical issues occur or if the student is engaged in some other work,
he/she can get access to the recorded sessions. So, the student is no longer
lagging because of missed classes. Many online tutors provide detailed notes
which make students understand the topic more efficiently.
6. LANGUAGE BARRIER:
Even in the 21st century, there
are rural places where people are not accessed to international languages. They
are not good at writing, speaking, or understanding language like English, so
digitalization allows learning in their comfortable, regional language and
getting the essence of the education to the fullest.
7. ADVICE AND EDUCATION FROM DIVERSE TEACHERS:
Every teacher has his/her way of
teaching and every student has his/her way of understanding. So, a teacher
cannot satisfy every student, but thanks to digital education which made a
student choose a teacher who is flexible for their level of understanding. So,
a student is exposed to instructors of different cultures, different thoughts
from various parts of the world. A student gets a solution to a particular
problem or question in many points of view which makes students more convenient
to understand the content.
8. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER:
As many aspirant's destiny is not
becoming a job holder, many senior citizens who didn’t have facilities in their
generations and many women in countries like India who was not allowed to go to
school so whoever irrespective of their age are interested in gaining knowledge
the doors to their dreams through digitalization are always open.
9. BREAKING THE BOUNDARIES OF LEARNING EXPERIENCE:
As learning is not bounded to a
book or a teacher it's like an endless sky with unlimited stars the more you
learn the more you gain. Learners who want to seek deeper knowledge in some
areas can easily go for more detailed lecturers from higher educators.
10. ECO-FRIENDLY EDUCATION:
E-learning saves papers by which a
lot of trees are saved. Indirectly the power consumption, water consumption are
saved.
CONS OF
DIGITALIZATION:
Every aspect has both pros and
cons. Its individual choice to choose the right path. As teenagers are the main
part of digitalization, they need to be guided enough to use the source of
knowledge on the right path.
1. DISTRACTIONS:
If one has to talk about
digitalization on the negative side the priority goes to distractive websites
on the internet which traps many of the teenagers. The internet is filled with
excessive, unnecessary, distractive websites. This can be avoided by taking
internet access to parental control. Not only on the internet but the
surrounding environment should be a healthy and peaceful place for learning
something. Many fraud websites don't give certificates by the end of their
graduation which leads to the great loss of time and money to students.
2. LACK OF DISCIPLINE:
As students have the flexibility
of learning anywhere at any time. It is very important for students who take up
online courses to be self-disciplined and manage their time well. The student
must be disciplined enough to complete his/her work on time without
procrastinating the work to pile up. Cheating becomes their own choice which
may not be the same for everyone.
3. LACK OF SOCIAL INTERACTION:
As a human is a social living
being, he/she needs to live in a society. As they learn everything online there
is very little chance of making new friends, talking to new people, interacting
with instructors, experiencing the situations in real life. They lack taking
decisions on their own. They cannot solve problems on their own. They get
nervous when they get to talk to new people. They cannot raise their voice when
necessary. Communication skills get low. This may majorly affect their job
opportunities.
4. LACK OF PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE:
Digital learning focuses mainly on theory rather than
practical knowledge which suppresses their experimental thinking. The main
reason for this is theoretical classes can be easily uploaded than the
practical classes which are very complicated to explain on an online medium and
for a field like medicine, practical knowledge and experience are all that
matters. So, this mode of teaching is only limited to certain fields of
education.
5. ACCESSIBILITY:
As mentioned earlier 41% of the world population doesn't have
accessibility to the internet, laptop, or any other digital technology
gadgets. So, they remain uneducated if the whole world turns into a digital
educating system. This may lead to a higher illiteracy rate in the world.
6. HEALTH ISSUES:
Due to a lack of physical activity, many health issues
arise in students. Eyesight issues make them get used to spectacles from a very
young age. Backache because of bad posture or due to long sitting hours and it
may also lead to obesity.
CONCLUSION:
The digitalization of the education system can be
completely implemented only in countries that are developed. But some countries
like India where poverty exists the combined learning and online learning
methods should be implemented so that the students who can afford online
classes can get access to it and the rest of the students continue the old
method of learning. By this, no one is left uneducated by their financial
status
Apart from the financial status of an individual,
digitalization of the education system is a productive way of learning and it
opens doors to new experiences, discoveries, new ways of learning, and
collaborating. Children and young people must obtain a correct formative
orientation that encourages them to use these tools for their benefits instead
of interrupting their education
