   CLINICAL TRIALS CANCER RESEARCH

As we all know about how clinical trials were conducted in all therapeutic areas however to some extent is complicated inOncology trials.Cancer clinical trials design by researcher s to test new ways or new treatment for cancer , to prevent ,manage symptoms of cancer & its side effects from treatment .Outcome of treatment impact on quality life of subject.

AIM OF THE CANCER CLINICAL TRIAL

To find out if a new treatment or procedure
  • Is it Safe
  • Has side effects
  • works better than the currently used treatment
  • Effects quality of life

TYPES OF CANCER CLINICAL TRIALS :

Cancer clinical trails are design to discover new ways or new treatment forcancer. There are different types cancer clinical trials. Each trail type design to answer different research question which will help researcher for futher future studies.

Treatment Trial :Itinvolve cancer patients  into trials to test new treatments or new ways
  • Drugs
  • Vaccines
  • Approaches to surgery or radiation therapy
  • Combinations of treatments, including onw which boost your immune system to help fight the cancer

Most of the newer treatment trials require people to encounter tumors tested for genetic changes to see if treatments targeting specific changes may work better than standard treatments.

Treatment trials are intended to answers questions such as:
  •  What is a safe dose of the new treatment?
  •  How should the new treatment be given?

Prevention Trials

Preventing cancer using drugs or lifestyle changes to reduce risk
  • How safe it is for a person to take this agent or do this activity?
  •  Does the new approach prevent cancer?

Screening Trials

Screening trial design to test new disease early, when it may treated easily an effective screening test will reduce the number of deaths from the cancer being screened.

Researchers who conduct cancer screening studies want to know:
  •  does detecting disease earlier, before symptoms arrise, save lives?
  •  is one screening test better than another?
  •  Do large numbers of people who receive the screening test undergo unnecessary follow-up tests and procedures?

Quality of life /PalliativeCare Trials

These trials enhance quality of life of cancer ppatientsTrials help peoplemanage with pain, nutrition problems, infection, nausea and vomiting, sleep disorders, depression, and other health problems.
Researchers who conduct these studies want to know:
  •  How does cancer and its treatment affect patients and their loved ones?
  • What can improve the comfort and quality of life of people who have cancer?

Natural History Studies

Study of cancer were researchers track people with disease or individual with at high risk for developing cancer (Example: Family history) over a long period of time. Researchers will collect details about you and your family’s medical history, tissue (such as blood and saliva) and tumor samples, and other data. Depending on the study, you need to provide samples and information just once, or many times over the course of the study. Researchers who conduct natural history studies use this information to study questions such as:
  •  How do specific cancers form, grow, and spread?
  • What genes cause cancer to develop at a high rate in certain families?
  • Can we learn clues to help prevent cancer?
  • Can we learn clues to help develop new treatments?

SELECTION OF PATIENT FOR THE TRAIL :

TRAIL DESIGN

  •  Randomised trials are the best way to get reliable information about how well a new treatment works
  •  A new cancer treatment that is good if not better than current treatment to find its  better need to be tested.

IMPORTANCE OF CLINICAL TRIALS IN TREATING PEOPLE WITH CANCER

  •  Cancer is been treated by MultidisciplinaryTeam,Oncology, Surgery & Radiation therapy
  •  The type of treatment based on stage of cancer
  •  Selecting treatment depend on many factors including individual charecteristics of tumor  itself& needs preference of individual patient
  •  If thereare two treatment which can achive similar effectiveness but have different side effects so,patient s preference & doctor understanding shud be prior in such situations.

CLINICAL TRIAL RESULTS:

  • End points: Different factors used to find out how long suject live after treament. They are trial end points called as primary  & secondary endpoints
  • Survival : Many researchers use something called the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) to analyse how well trial treatments work. They measure the area of cancer on a scan before and after treatment, to see how much it’s changed.
  • Side effects :Any untoward effect may or may not be related to study drug called as AE (adverse event)
  • Quality of life : Measures any positive or negative effect due to treatment in patient day to day life

WHAT ARE TAPUR STUDY :

The Targeted Agent and Profiling Utilization Registry (TAPUR) It s a clinical trial for people with later-stage cancer, paying attention on whether specific targeted therapies can benefit more patients and lead to more personalized therapies.

Benefits of cancer clinical trial :

  • Acces to high quality treatment cancer therapy which is better than standard of care
  • An opportunity to help future cancer patients & contribution to research

Risk of cancer clinical trials :

  • Possibly will have more blood tests, scans or other cancer tests
  • You may have check ups more often and for longer than usual
  • The extra appointments may cost you time and money (for bus fares or carparking for example)
